Ooooops! For anyone who wonders, Buxton ATs 1788-1812 have been added to the wrong place on the website. They appear as census returns, which is of course an error - for which we aplologise. As and when there's time, they will be moved to their correction location.

Parish Info
=======
With contributions from several people, we've been plugging away at
adding odd bits of information to several parishes. The information in
this section is not indexed and so cannot be located using the search
engine. Insetad, click on the 'Parishes' link and then the name of the
individual parish. These parishes have something added to them in this
section:

Coltishall, Lammas, Horstead, Hautbois Magna, Garboldisham, Sloley,
Stibbard, Westwick, Frettenham, Buxton, Stratton Strawless, Melton
Constable, Worstead, Wroxham, Swaffham, Salhouse, Norwich, Barnham
Broom, Gayton Thorpe, Pentney, West Rudham, Shipdham, Great
Walsingham, Seething, Runhall

Parish Info is very useful for adding snippets that would be difficult
to include elsewhere, but which are never-the-less of interest - e.g.
descriptions of villages, strays, misc entries from registers,
letters, memories of a village. If you have anything of use please get
in touch and I'll see if it can be added to the site.

A reminder about a other important and useful sites for Norfolk
research:

Also don't forget Paddy Apling's 1891 Census Surname Index:
http://apling.freeservers.com/CensusInfo.htm
This also links to many directory entries for Norfolk

Mark Howells has put together a webpage of contiguous parishes
within the county. This has many links that make its usefulness far
more extensive than merely a simple list. If you want to find out what
is available where, this site is a very important first step:
http://www.rootsweb.com/~nfhs/ib/cont-intro.htm

Rob the Hermit hosts a site that is worth checking
Old Norfolk Net, which includes details of courts and yards of
Norwich; and a collection of photographs
http://www.oldnorfolk.net/

The Norfolk Transcription Archive is only meant to be a research aid,
particularly intended for those who want to make best use of their
time when going to record centres; and those of you who live hundreds
or thousands of miles from Norfolk for whom access to information is
difficult.

Where possible, you'll still need to check the original/fiche/film
to obtain full details of the parish register entries. But we hope
that the site may give your research a new direction or throw up
odd entries which are of interest.

If you have any problems navigating through the site, please drop me a

Request for help
===========
If you live in Norfolk, or have lived there sometime ago, or have
notes written about a parish from even earlier - we'd love to include
them on the site. These don't have to be great literary works, but may
help those who cannot get to the county to understand better what the
place is/was like. Drop me a line if you're are interested in helping.

The facilities on the site have recently been updated, making searching easier and allowing you to look at the information in different ways. The following is a summary of these facilities:

Search
=====
Enter a name or part of a name and a search will bring up all matches
in the database.
So for those researching difficult names such as RISEBOROUGH and all
its variants, you might just try entering 'RIS'. This will bring back
any name with those consecutive letters.

If you've used the archive before and just want to search on recent
additions, you can ask for just new entries since your last visit to
the site.

A new feature is that if you are interested in a name in just one part
of the county, you can now search by district. So if you are
researching SMITH in North East Norfolk; you might try entering SMITH
and 'Aylsham' district.

When you get matches on a surname search, you will see on the right
side of the screen a link "source", click on that and you will be
taken to the complete index/record for that parish for that year (e.g.
the complete census return, all the baptisms for that year, etc).

Surnames
======
This is a simple alphabetical listing of all surnames, each grouped
under the initial letter

Documents
=======
I use this a lot, it gives access to all the source documents which
have been indexed on site. Click on it and you will be given a link
to:

"List by Document Type"

and also links to each of the districts and hundreds within Norfolk
Click on the districts and then the respective parish of interest and
you'll get a list of what information is held in the archive relating
to that parish. Access photos through this route and you'll be shown
thumbnails, click on the thumbnail to get a larger image.

Click on "List by Document Type" and there are links to all the
various source documents, including photos

Parishes
======
A new feature - for those not familiar with the location of parishes
within Norfolk. All the parishes are listed alphabetically along with
their district and each is linked through to the source documents for
that parish.

Transcribers
========
Lists all those folks who have helped with the site. A new feature is
a link through the name of the transcriber. Those who have contributed
can now (if they wish) add details such as where they are in the
world, their surname interests, their website URL and also how they
may be able to help you further.

Links
====
This gives a few website URLs that you may find useful in your
research, museums, archives, military records, etc

Help
===
A few pages that give odd snippets of information that may help you -
common abbreviations, Latin words, and what a few words and phrases
mean.

Village Descriptions
==============
There are frequently messages on the Norfolk list asking where a
particular village or town is and if it still exists. It's still in
development , but we will be including the location and directions to
parishes in Norfolk, along with descriptions of the place. When
everything is sorted out with this, we'll be asking for help in
completing these records

If you have any difficulties navigating the site, please get in touch
and I'll do my best to lead you around it.
